अभी France shift हुए हो। Visa sort हो गया, temporary address है, और real life यहाँ build करने के लिए ready हो। फिर Ameli app खोलते हो health insurance status check करने के लिए और हर single word French में है।

“ज़्यादातर French में English toggle के साथ” नहीं। “French लेकिन helpful icons के साथ” नहीं। बस… French। Dense, bureaucratic, administrative French — वो किस्म जो Duolingo में नहीं सिखाते।

तो screen का screenshot लेते हो। Google Translate खोलते हो। Image upload करते हो। Translation पर squint करते हो। Ameli पर वापस switch करते हो। याद करने की कोशिश करते हो कि कौन सा button “attestation de droits” बोल रहा था। अगली screen का screenshot लो। Repeat।

77 लाख लोग, Same Problem

France 77 लाख immigrants का घर है, latest INSEE figures के मुताबिक़। लगभग 1.7 लाख Britons के पास French residency cards हैं। 13,000 से ज़्यादा Americans को 2024 में अकेले पहला French residency card मिला — पिछले साल से 5% ज़्यादा। और ये सिर्फ़ official numbers हैं, students, digital nomads, या long-stay visas वाले count नहीं।

इनमें से हर एक same दीवार से टकराता है: France में function करने के लिए ज़रूरी apps तुम्हारी language नहीं बोलतीं।

ये tourist problem नहीं है। Tourists को restaurant menu translate करना है। तुम्हें tax declaration translate करनी है, health insurance portal, housing benefit application, और prefecture से आई वो mystery letter जो बिना किसी explanation और दो हफ़्ते की deadline के साथ आई।

वो Apps जिनसे बच नहीं सकते

France के बारे में ये बात है — country एक specific ecosystem of apps और government portals पर चलती है जिनका कोई real alternative नहीं। “English version use करो” नहीं कर सकते क्योंकि usually होता ही नहीं। और skip भी नहीं कर सकते क्योंकि ये healthcare, housing benefits, taxes, और country में रहने का legal right control करती हैं।

Ameli — Health Insurance

Ameli French healthcare system की lifeline है — reimbursements, insurance attestations, Carte Vitale status, और CPAM (local health insurance office) के साथ हर interaction।

App पूरी तरह French में है। कोई English toggle नहीं। Ameli website पर कुछ English help pages हैं, लेकिन actual portal जहाँ काम करते हो? French। Forms, notifications, reimbursement breakdowns, CPAM office के messages — सब French।

Technically एक English helpline (09 74 75 36 46) है, लेकिन Ameli forum पर expats ने बताया है कि हफ़्तों तक unreachable रहती है। एक user ने लिखा कि calls “disconnected हो जाती हैं या French line पर route हो जाती हैं” despite number English option के रूप में listed होने के।

जब Ameli account dossier के बारे में red status message दिखाए और समझ न आए, तो ये minor inconvenience नहीं है। ये healthcare है।

CAF — Housing Benefits

CAF housing assistance (APL), family benefits, और social benefits handle करता है। France में rent पर रहते हो तो almost certainly APL के लिए qualify करते हो, जो monthly rent से अच्छा-ख़ासा chunk काट सकता है।

पूरी application, website, app, और notifications French में हैं। जब application suspend हो जाती है — और होगी, किसी ऐसी वजह से जो immediately clear नहीं — explanation French administrative language में आता है जो native speakers को भी challenge करे।

Leboncoin — French Craigslist

Leboncoin France का dominant classified ads platform है — अकेले 15 लाख real estate listings। यहाँ apartments, furniture, used cars, jobs, और basically हर वो चीज़ मिलती है जो life set up करने में चाहिए।

कोई English version नहीं। Website और app French-only हैं। Browser translation web version पर help कर सकता है, लेकिन app? अकेले हो। और जब sellers को couch के बारे में message कर रहे हो या rental listing पर reply कर रहे हो, तो उन्होंने क्या लिखा ये समझना और sensible reply देना ज़रूरी है।

Doctolib — Medical Appointments

इस list में अच्छी ख़बर। Doctolib English support करता है और English-speaking doctors filter कर सकते हो।

Catch: कई doctor profiles और medical specialties English select करने के बाद भी French में दिखती हैं। और appointment पर पहुँचो तो ordonnance (prescription) French में है, pharmacy instructions French में हैं, और कोई भी follow-up Ameli के through — guess what — French में है।

SNCF Connect — Train Booking

SNCF Connect में English language support है, technically। iPhone की per-app settings (Settings > SNCF Connect > Preferred Language > English) से language change कर सकते हो। लेकिन expats report करते हैं कि error messages language setting के बावजूद French में pop up होते हैं, और कुछ screens translate ही नहीं होतीं।

बाक़ी सब

List और लंबी होती जाती है। EDF / Engie (utility bills) — billing interface और app French में हैं despite English helpline। Ile-de-France Mobilites (Paris transit / Navigo pass) — primarily French, और European phone number require करता है। SeLoger / PAP (apartment hunting) — SeLoger का partial English version है; PAP French-only। France Travail (job search, पहले Pole Emploi) — “only feasible if you read French well,” उनकी ख़ुद की docs के मुताबिक़। Vinted France — location based French पर default करता है बिना manual override। La Poste, Allocine, Marmiton — French, French, French।

Browser Translation क्यों काम नहीं करता

Browser में websites के लिए Chrome का built-in translator reasonably well काम करता है। Chrome से impots.gouv.fr auto-translate के साथ usable है, अगर imperfect।

Floating Overlay Approach

Long tail — Commune की local services app, parking app जो सिर्फ़ तुम्हारे arrondissement में exist करती है, बच्चे का school portal। France में apps का deep ecosystem है जिसका कभी English version नहीं आएगा क्योंकि French audience के लिए बनी हैं।

जहाँ Human की जगह नहीं ले सकता

Legal documents — Bail (lease), contrat de travail (employment contract), कुछ भी जो sign कर रहे हो। Traducteur assermente use करो। Machine translation legal consequences वाले documents के लिए appropriate नहीं है।
